So……..some people are wondering how much of the work viewed on this blog belongs to Laura and how much of it is being done by her mother? The answer is one that evolves every day, actually. As a mom, one of my goals is to help Laura become proficient with many aspects of blogging by the end of these twenty five days. In order to do that, we’re taking things one step at a time.
On December 1st, Laura selected her blogging template and she told me how she wanted her blog set up. She wrote her About page as well as her very first entry. When traffic started to pick up a bit more than we expected it to, she suggested adding the pages that you find across the top of our home page. In doing so, she learned the difference between writing a “page” and writing a “post.” Every day, she is learning a bit more.
At this point, Laura is able to navigate the dashboard of this blog well enough to write pages and posts without any assistance from me. She is also able to upload pictures all on her own, hyperlink other pages, and manage her blogroll. She reads all of the comments once I approve of them, and this week, she is trying to go back and “comment” on her comments…..she’s learning that she can dialogue with people in that space a bit.
Tonight, we’re going to be focusing on widgets! One of Laura’s favorite widgets is the map widget that is found on the bottom RIGHT of this home page. This widget allows us to see the locations of those who are visiting her page. Today, though, I’ve installed a Platial map widget on the bottom LEFT corner, under her stats page….and this is where PARTICIPANTS IN THE PROJECT can have some extra fun.
While I am at work today, I am hoping that some of you who are participating in the project will add your location to this map. Just above the map, you will see a tiny “marker” or “pin”. When you click on it, a box will appear in which you can type your location. Please do not add your exact street address! If you simply pop your state or country into the bottom line, the map should shift to the state or country that you are from. Then, you can move the “pin” wherever you would like it to rest in order to reflect your GENERAL location.
Thought this might be a fun addition for today and a good learning experience for Laura too….thank you to Lynne for suggesting it! Of course, with my luck, the thing won’t function right, and we will end up taking it down. But I’ll keep my fingers crossed, and I’ll see how it goes with all of you today.
Thanks for playing along!
